What your rune of the day tells you

A rune is not a command but a mirror. It gives your day a colour, a theme, a quiet hint – of what you may pay attention to today.

Draw a rune in the morning, read its core meaning and ask yourself: Where am I meeting this theme right now? In the evening, look back briefly. Over time a fine feeling for each sign grows – that is the real treasure of the rune oracle. Below you'll find all 24 runes of the Elder Futhark with their meanings, plus the classic casting methods and an honest reckoning.

How to draw & cast the runes

From a simple daily impulse to a deep spread – choose what fits your question.

The Rune of the Day

One rune for the day. Form an open question (“What may I pay attention to today?”), draw blind and relate its core meaning to your day. Look back briefly in the evening.

Three-Rune Spread

Three runes side by side: Past – Present – Future or, solution-focused, Situation – Challenge – Advice. Read each first, then as a small story.

The Norns Spread

The Norse three-rune variant after the fate-women: Urd (what has become) – Verdandi (what is becoming) – Skuld (the tendency). Skuld is not a fixed verdict but a direction.

Five-Rune Cross

Centre = core of the question, left = causes, right = tendency, top = what carries you, bottom = the obstacle. Read the axes: time and forces against resistance.

Casting the Runes

Throw a handful of runes over a light cloth. Those lying upright and readable speak clearest; nearness links themes, nearness to the centre stresses urgency.

Upright & reversed

A reversed rune (“merkstave”) is usually not the opposite but muted or blocked. Nine runes are symmetrical and have no reversal – many read entirely without reversals.

The Three Ættir

“Ætt” means family or group of eight. The futhark divides into three of them – a lovely map for reading: the first Ætt (Fehu–Wunjo) lays life's foundations (wealth, strength, knowledge, joy). The second Ætt (Hagalaz–Sowilo) is the world of trial and natural forces (change, need, cycle, victory). The third Ætt (Tiwaz–Othala) stands for order, being human and completion (justice, partnership, ripeness, heritage). You can read it as a journey: build → be tested → complete.

Honestly: how old is the rune oracle?

Runes are ancient cultural heritage – as writing. A fixed rune oracle in today's sense (a bag of stones with a book of meanings) is, at its core, modern, shaped above all by Ralph Blum in 1982. No historical spread is handed down; today's meanings are a modern system inspired by the old rune poems (Old English, Norwegian, Icelandic, public domain). Tacitus does describe a Germanic lot-oracle with signs on wooden staves around 98 AD – but he writes “signs”, not “runes”. This honesty matters to us: we don't dress ourselves in false age, but in genuine joy of interpretation. As a tool for mindfulness and self-reflection the rune of the day is valuable – not fortune-telling and no substitute for medical, legal or financial advice.

Frequently asked

How do I draw a rune of the day correctly?

A quiet moment, an open question (“What may I pay attention to today?”), draw one rune blind, relate its core meaning to your day – and look back briefly in the evening. That's exactly what the tool above is for.

Is a rune oracle historically real or modern?

Runes are ancient – as writing. Drawing runes from a set is largely modern (above all Ralph Blum, 1982). As a tool for self-reflection it's valuable all the same – we're honest about both.

What does a reversed rune (merkstave) mean?

A muted, blocked or challenging version of the message – usually not the opposite. Nine runes (e.g. Isa, Sowilo, Dagaz, Gebo, Jera) are symmetrical and have no reversal.

Can the rune of the day predict the future?

No. It shows a theme and an impulse, not a fixed fate. Even the Norns know no rigid “predestined” – Skuld is tendency, not verdict.

Is a rune oracle the same as tarot?

No. Different roots, fewer and shorter symbols (24 runes instead of 78 cards), terser and more archaic. Both are reflection tools, not fortune-telling.

Do I need the blank Odin rune (Wyrd)?

No. The blank 25th stone is a modern invention (Blum, 1982) and attested in no old source. Use it if you like – or leave it out.
