High in summer, when the first ears ripen, the harvest begins. Freyfaxi is the harvest-thanks feast of the ring – named after Freyr, god of the „good year", and after his sacred horse.
When Freyfaxi Falls
Freyfaxi is tied to no solar point but to the start of the harvest – traditionally around 1 August (Lammas time). It marks the passage from growing to gathering in.
Where the Name Comes From
Freyfaxi is the name of Freyr’s sacred horse in the Hrafnkels saga Freysgoða. Hrafnkell, a priest of Freyr (a „Freysgoði"), dedicated the horse to the god and swore to kill anyone who rode it without leave – an oath that sets the saga’s tragedy in motion. A direct „Freyfaxi harvest feast" is not attested for the Viking Age; the name is used in modern heathenry for the harvest-thanks blót.
Freyr & the Good Year
Freyr is the god of fertility, peace and ár, the good year; Snorri tells that under his rule at Uppsala „there was a good season in all lands", and they went on sacrificing to him til árs ok friðar. Harvest-thanks rightly belongs to him – and the horse-cult (also in Völsa þáttr) ties Freyr to fertility and field.
Celebrating Today
Bake bread from new grain, share the first fruits, give thanks for the plenty. A table laid full – and a portion set aside for the land and its wights. Share what comes to you; shared plenty fills back up.

And now you: write your own short verse for this feast – four or five lines are enough, it need not rhyme. Recite it next time by the fire or at the sumbel. That is the finest honour one can pay a feast.
