March bears a god’s name in Bede: Hréðmónath, „month of Hreða", a goddess sacrificed to in it. Like Éostre, she is attested nowhere else – a name from the dark.
Name & Meaning
Bede names the month after the goddess Hreða (Rheda), to whom sacrifice was made in it. Whether she is a distinct deity is disputed; the element hrēð means „glory, victory", so a „month of glory/fierceness" has also been proposed. The German name Lenzing simply means the start of spring.
Work & Custom
The earth wakes, the light returns, and around the spring equinox the real fieldwork begins: ploughing, sowing the summer grain (oats, barley), setting the gardens in order. In the month-pictures March stands for digging and pruning – the year is being tilled.
