The Brigantes: Power, Queen and Betrayal

History & Finds The Brigantes: Power, Queen and Betrayal placeholder

The Brigantes were the largest Celtic people of Britain, settled in the north of England. Their wide territory made them a key factor in the Roman conquest.

Queen Cartimandua

At their head stood the queen Cartimandua – one of the few Celtic rulers known by name. As a client queen she held loyally to Rome.

The handing over of Caratacus

When the resistance fighter Caratacus sought refuge with her, Cartimandua handed him over to Rome – a betrayal that decisively weakened British resistance. Later an internal power struggle toppled her rule; Rome intervened and incorporated the Brigantian land into the empire.

"Cartimandua, queen of the Brigantes, powerful through noble descent."after Tacitus, Histories 3 (public domain, own translation)
What is documented: Brigantes as the largest people of Britain, Queen Cartimandua as a Rome-loyal client ruler and the handing over of Caratacus (Tacitus, Annals/Histories); the later incorporation into the empire.
What is interpretation: Tacitus paints Cartimandua in a partisan, negative way (betrayal, adultery) – a Roman-tinted image of a woman. Her true motives and the internal order of the Brigantes are hard to grasp.

The Brigantes show Rome's game with Celtic kingdoms. Continue with the Silures and Britons.
