The Britons were the Celtic peoples of the island of Britain – among them the Iceni, Trinovantes, Catuvellauni and many more. From AD 43 Rome conquered the south of the island.
In AD 60/61 the Iceni queen Boudicca rose against Roman abuses. Her army devastated Camulodunum (Colchester), Londinium (London) and Verulamium – tens of thousands died before the Romans crushed the revolt.
Rome never fully subdued the north of the island; Hadrian's Wall marked the frontier. So Celtic culture stayed alive especially in the north and west – unlike on the conquered mainland.
