The Angrivarii were a Germanic tribe on the middle Weser, in today's Lower Saxony. Their name lives on in the region of "Engern".

The Angrivarian rampart

A broad earthen rampart separated their territory from that of the Cherusci – a rare example of a fixed Germanic border work. In AD 16 this rampart became the scene of a fierce battle between Arminius and the Roman general Germanicus.

Between Rome and the neighbours

Now enemies, now allies of Rome, the Angrivarii later merged into the confederation of the Saxons. They stand for the small-scale, shifting world of power between Weser and Elbe.

What is documented: Angrivarii on the Weser, the Angrivarian rampart as a border with the Cherusci and the battle at the rampart in AD 16 against Germanicus (Tacitus, Annals 2); their merging into the Saxons.

What is interpretation: The exact location of the rampart and the battlefield is not secured to this day. "Engern" as a successor name is plausible, but the continuity over centuries remains interpretation.
