The Angrivarii were a Germanic tribe on the middle Weser, in today's Lower Saxony. Their name lives on in the region of "Engern".

The Angrivarii were a Germanic tribe on the middle Weser, in today's Lower Saxony. They sat between powerful neighbours – the Cherusci to the south and the Frisians and Chauci on the coast – and had to assert their position again and again.
Their boundary rampart became famous, a mighty earthen dam they had thrown up against the Cherusci. In AD 16 it became the scene of a battle: the Roman general Germanicus stormed the rampart in the fight against Arminius in a bloody struggle that Tacitus describes in his "Annals".
The Angrivarii manoeuvred cleverly: now allies of Rome, now part of the Germanic coalition against the legions. After the Varus battle and the Germanicus campaigns they were among the tribes that outlasted the Roman withdrawal from the right bank of the Rhine.
In the following centuries the Angrivarii merged into the great confederation of the Saxons. As "Engern" (Latin Angarii) they formed one of the three great subgroups of the Saxon people, alongside the Westphalians and Eastphalians.
The name lived on in the medieval duchy and in the landscape. When Charlemagne subdued the Saxons, the land of the Engern belonged to the heartland of that struggle. Thus the small Weser tribe links the early Germanic age with the rise of medieval Saxony.
