The Lugii were not a single tribe but a league of several peoples in the east of Germania, between the Oder and the Vistula. Tacitus counts among them the Nahanarvali, Harii and Helveconae, among others.
As a large, powerful league the Lugii controlled important trade routes – such as the amber road from the Baltic to the Danube. At times they were in contact with Rome and even asked for help against the Suebi.
In the struggle of the East Germanic peoples the Lugii were caught between mighty neighbours. Later their name disappears; the region is linked with the early Vandals and the Przeworsk culture.
