The Menapii were a Belgic-Celtic people on the North Sea coast and in the Rhine delta, in the border area of today's Belgium and the Netherlands – near our region.
Their land of marshes, forests and waterways made them hard to attack. When Caesar marched against them, the Menapii withdrew into impassable swamps – a guerrilla war that wore the legions down.
The Menapii sat at the seam with the Germanic world. At times Germanic groups such as the Usipetes and Tencteri crossed their territory. Later parts of the region carried the name on.
