Few questions reach us in the workshop as often as this one: „Which material actually suits my motif best?" Whether natural slate, warm real wood or fine crystal glass – each one tells a different story. This guide helps you pick the right one.
An engraving is more than an image on a surface. The material decides how the motif reads, how long it lasts and whether it fits the occasion. A Thor's hammer looks massive and ancient on dark slate, a family name feels warm and homely on a wood slice, a runic saying turns mysterious in the candlelight of a lantern. All our pieces are laser-engraved – the laser removes the surface precisely and reveals what lies beneath. How that looks depends entirely on the material. Let us walk through the three classics one by one.
Slate is our character piece. The stone runs deep anthracite to black, and this is exactly where the magic happens: where the laser removes the slate, the pale mineral underneath comes to light. The engraving appears bright and silvery-grey on a dark ground – a contrast that seems made for Norse motifs. Gods, wolves, dragons, runes and Yggdrasil come across especially strikingly on slate.
Slate is also wonderfully easy-going: it is hard, weatherproof and tolerates moisture, which makes it suitable for indoors as much as for sheltered outdoor spots – patio, covered entrance, conservatory. Every slab carries its own grown grain and fine edges; none is exactly like the other. If you like it dark, sturdy and long-lasting, our slate plates are the right base.
Wood is the exact counterpart to slate: warm instead of cool, light instead of dark, soft in its feel. On birch, oak or teak the engraving shows as a gentle, darker drawing that blends into the natural structure of the wood. Knots, growth rings and bark edges make each piece come alive. Our wood slices are hand-sanded and oiled before they go into the laser – this brings out the grain and protects the surface.
Wood plays to its strengths indoors: as a door sign in the hallway, a tree of life above the sofa, a tea-light holder on the table. Constant rain and frost are not its friends, though, so we recommend real wood mostly for the sheltered indoor space. For everything warm, family-related and down-to-earth, our wood slices and wooden signs are the first choice.
If you like it festive, there is no way past glass. Our lanterns are made of Stölzle crystal glass from Lusatia – from one of Europe's most renowned glassworks, whose motto „born in fire" fits our motifs well. Here the laser engraving turns matt and satin and stands out softly from the clear glass. Light a candle and the play begins: the light travels through the engraved lines and casts the runes or gods' features gently into the room.
Glass is ideal for mood and occasion – a wedding gift, a memorial light, an eye-catcher for the long winter evening. It clearly belongs indoors and wants to be handled with care, but rewards you with an elegance no other material offers. Browse our lanterns if your motif is meant to glow.

As a rule of thumb from many years at the laser: gods, runes and large symbolic motifs belong on slate – the dark ground gives them weight and depth. A Thor's hammer or a valknut looks as if carved in stone. Family themes, tree of life, names and occasion sayings unfold their full warmth on a wood slice – the wood itself already speaks of roots and growth. And when it comes to mood, a personal gift or a name in candlelight, the lantern is unbeatable. Of course these are not laws but suggestions: a ring of runes also looks wonderful on glass, and a family name suits slate very well.
Just bring us your motif and tell us where it will stand later. A piece that will hang permanently on the patio we decide differently from a memorial light for the living room. Often we quickly notice in conversation that a customer had wood in mind, but the motif works far more strongly on slate – or the other way round. This short exchange saves disappointment and makes the finished piece truly good.
All three materials are low-maintenance, but each wants its own treatment: slate enjoys the occasional drop of care oil, wood likes a little wood oil now and then, and glass needs only a soft, lint-free cloth. We include detailed notes with every piece and are happy to advise you personally.
Natural slate is the most robust. It is hard, weatherproof and tolerates moisture, which makes it the only one of our materials suited to sheltered outdoor areas too. Wood and crystal glass are meant for indoors.
Yes, in a sheltered spot like a covered patio or an entrance area. It should not be exposed to years of harsh weather with frost and standing water, but in a sheltered outdoor space it holds up excellently.
It comes down to the material. On slate the laser removes the dark surface and reveals the pale mineral beneath – the engraving appears silvery-bright. On wood the surface chars finely and thereby becomes darker than the surrounding wood.
