The Boii were a mighty, far-flung Celtic tribe. Their traces reach from northern Italy (around Bologna, whose ancient name Bononia goes back to them) via the Alpine region into central Europe. Best known is their name as the origin of "Bohemia" (Latin Boiohaemum, "home of the Boii").
In northern Italy the Boii were among the most stubborn Celtic opponents of Rome, until they were subjected in the 2nd century BC. Other groups of the Boii sat in central Europe, minted coins and carried on long-distance trade. They were not a single place but a name that appears across wide areas – typical of the mobile Celtic world.
Later the central European Boii came under pressure – from the Dacians and other peoples. Ancient authors speak of a deserta Boiorum, a "desert of the Boii": a depopulated land that the Boii left behind. Into this area later moved Germanic tribes such as the Marcomanni – but the old Celtic name Bohemia remained.
