The Naristi (also Varisti) were a small Germanic people on the upper Danube, in the neighbourhood of the Marcomanni and Quadi. Tacitus names them among the Suebian peoples.
As a small people the Naristi lay in the shadow of mighty neighbours and in the border zone with the Roman Empire. Their position made them players in the great Danube wars of the 2nd century.
During the Marcomannic Wars the Naristi leader Valao defected to Rome with many thousands of people and was settled in the empire. So part of the people vanished into the Empire – a typical fate of small border tribes.
