Frija (Proto-Germanic *Frijjō) was one of the highest goddesses of the continental Germani, the continental counterpart of the Norse Frigg. Her name lives on in Friday, the day that corresponded to the Roman Venus.
Frija appears in the Second Merseburg Charm: when Balder's horse sprains its foot, several goddesses and gods speak over the wound, among them "Frija" and "Volla, her sister". It is one of the rare genuine attestations of continental Germanic god-names.
Like the Norse Frigg, Frija is linked with marriage, home and fertility. Whether she was originally identical with Freyja (the "Frija-Frigg-Freyja question") is disputed to this day. Certain is: on Friday her name echoes every week.
